Music Style: Blues
About Us: Raised in the Tennessee hills, Blue Blake's grungy, raspy, gravelly voice reminds you of a feisty old curmudgeon who's just taken a swig from the whiskey jug. No young white boy should have such a voice unless he's experienced it - life that is! And Blue Blake has experienced life, the good and the bad. His original compositions tell his story.
"My mind don't work like yours does, my water don't run hot or cold, you can't turn me off and then turn me on, and I don't do what I'm told. I'm consistently unpredictable, I'm not your average Joe." sings Blue Blake in Not Your Average Joe (Weibert Music Publishing).
He 's worked the crowd, played the clubs, busked on Beale Street, and strummed in
B.B. King's. As a solo act, a duo or as a member of a band, Blue Blake takes the lead. He gets the crowd stompin' their feet, wriggling their hips, "shaking their money makers" and having one hell of a good time.
He takes you on a funky ride down through the Delta. No smooth ride to calm your soul. He may look kind of cute, but don't let that mislead you. He's going to give it to you as good as you want and more. He'll put you up and take you down. He flows like the Mississippi, fast and furious one minute, slow and languid the next. He'll give you blues, raw, the way it should be played.
Blue Blake's style is his own. He follows in no one's footsteps. His sound emulates the freedom call, the urgency of desire, and the voices of long ago. You can tell from the originals and standards he plays that he relates to the original blues, the basic blues, the country blues that created rock. No frills to this guy's playing. Impassioned, raunchy, distinctive riffs to match the twang, the growl and the howl.
Basically, this guy's got the blues.
"The blues don't have to be fancy and slick. And they are best when they are raw and real. Blue Blake is as real as it gets, for a young white boy, from open tuning steel string slide guitar to finger-picking flat-top acoustic. He writes his own music, and pulls out standards too, often inviting musician friends who happen to be in the audience to sit in. If you are in the mood for the blues, this young man will belt them out for you."
